visit and train ride

We visited my grandparents yesterday. Brett and the two older kids went with Grandpa to ride on the train.

David and I stayed back at the house with Grandma.

My grandparents live at a Presbyterian Home, currently in the independent living section. Next month they are moving into the assisted living apartments. Grandma, David and I took a tour of their new apartment. I am skeptical that Grandma will be able to squish a large, three bedroom home into a small, two bedroom apartment. Change is hard. It is one thing to do this kind of work with church members; it is much harder when it is your own family.

Prayers and patience are requested as I go to Grandma's and attempt to pitch useless junk. The problem is they don't want to part with anything. *sigh* I am at the stage where I want to part with lots of stuff. I realized I didn't OWN stuff - it OWNED me! Grandma sees her identity in her stuff and wants her children to take it, or give it to the poor. No thanks! Most of the junk, to quote "The Sound of Music" is stuff the poor wouldn't want.

I'm glad Tom and Lily enjoyed the train ride. Sweet pictures.

Your comment about working through this transition in your own family with your parents as opposed to working through it with a parishioner reminds me of a quote from one of my texts.

"We are no different from those that come to us."
    - James Ashbrook, Minding the Soul, Pastoral Counseling as Remembering

He was writing about how we sometimes see ourselves as superhuman and able to solve everyone's problems. It also has a self-care aspect to it as well. I wish peace to you both, liz and BesoMami. Take care of yourselves and remember you have friends on which you may lean!

BTW, I loved the pictures. Thanks for sharing them.

    Beautiful pics of the kids.

Regarding the grandparents, you are so right. I'm going through this with my parents right now. Change and transition to new phases of life are so very difficult for everyone involved. Praying for all of you.
